Some people get attention because they are loud. Others earn respect because they quietly shape the future. That is why I think @snowmaker is one of the most underrated people in tech. Jared Friedman is not just another investor or YC voice. He is a builder who has lived the founder journey, co-founded Scribd, helped build one of the most important startup ecosystems in the world, and has spent years helping founders think more clearly, build better, and aim higher. And when you put him beside @garrytan, you get one of the most powerful founder education combinations in tech. Garry brings the rare mix of founder, designer, engineer, investor, operator, storyteller, and community builder. He does not just talk about startups from a distance. He has built, backed, designed, advised, and fought for the kind of ecosystem where ambitious founders can become legendary. There is intelligence. There is genius. And then there is the rare kind of genius that makes other people believe they can build something world-changing. That is what @snowmaker and @garrytan represent. They are not just teaching founders how to raise money. They are teaching people how to think. How to build. How to move faster. How to be more ambitious. How to make something people want. How to believe that the next generation of great technology companies can still be built by people who are just getting started. These are the kinds of people who deserve their flowers while they are still doing the work. Tech needs more voices like this. Builders who create builders. Founders who strengthen founders. Leaders who make the future feel possible. I realized that goal setting is the core RL loop of a startup. Set a two-week goal Hit the goal? → Reward signal. Reinforce what worked. Missed it? → Negative reward. Diagnose root cause, update strategy, try again.

Yesterday we hosted 400 top university students at the YC Summer Conference - a fun day of talks about startups.  Talking to the students afterwards, I found myself giving a lot of the same advice. So in case it's useful to others, here is my startup advice for students.

Every startup has two products. The product you are actually building. And the product people think you are building. The second one matters more than most founders realize. You can have a strong product, a smart team, and a real market opportunity — but if your message creates confusion, people will move on before they understand the value. Great founders lose meetings because investors cannot quickly explain what they do. Great products get ignored because customers do not immediately understand why they matter. And sometimes, simpler products win because their story is clear enough to spread. Here is the real test: If someone asks what your startup does, can they explain it to another person when you are not in the room? That may be more important than any landing page metric. In the early days, your job is not to explain everything. Your job is to make one thing unforgettable. For solo founders, non-technical founders, and early-stage builders, this is one of the biggest advantages you can create. You do not need the most complex product. You need the clearest story. Because people do not share what they do not understand. Clarity is not just marketing. Clarity is part of the product. Controversial thought: I used to think founders with a lot of money had the biggest unfair advantage. And yes, capital helps. Money buys time. Money helps you hire better people. Money gives you room to move faster, test more, and survive longer. But the more founders you study, the clearer it becomes: The biggest advantage in startups cannot be bought. It is obsession. The best founders are not just interested. They are consumed by the problem. They keep building when the market is cold. They keep learning when the product fails. They keep adapting when customers say no. They keep going when the easy version of the company dies. Capital can give a founder resources. But it cannot give them hunger. It cannot give them resilience. It cannot give them conviction. It cannot make them care deeply enough to survive the hard parts. A great investor can fund a business. A great team can help scale a business. But only obsession can turn an idea into a company that refuses to die. Capital can fund the journey. It cannot create the founder. If you have not exited a company for $100M , most investors are not backing you on reputation alone. That means one thing: Build and launch something real before you ask for money. In this AI era, the excuses are disappearing fast. Founders can now build MVPs faster, test ideas faster, create content faster, automate workflows faster, and get early customer feedback faster than ever before. So when you show up to raise capital with only an idea, no product, no traction, no proof, and no clear market signal, investors have every reason to pass. Before you raise, do the work. Build the product. Launch it. Talk to customers. Show usage. Create momentum. Assemble an angel army. Bundle the conversations. Create calendar density. Make it feel like the round is already moving before the first check comes in. Because the preparation to raise $100K is the same preparation required to raise $100M. The difference is not the seriousness of the process. The difference is the scale of the outcome. Most founders underestimate this. They show up half-ready, underprepared, and hoping the pitch will carry them. But capital follows preparation, proof, momentum, and trust. In today’s market, the founder who builds before raising has the advantage. A founder told me recently that he felt embarrassed because his seed round was “only” $3M. Why? Because every time he opened his timeline, other founders were announcing $50M rounds, massive valuations, and big-name investors. But here is the truth most people do not say out loud: A bigger raise is not always a stronger company. Some of those founders announcing huge rounds are now carrying heavy dilution, high expectations, aggressive growth targets, and investor pressure that can break the business if the numbers do not move fast enough. Meanwhile, a founder with a clean cap table, low burn, disciplined spending, and enough capital to build properly may actually be in a stronger position. The problem is noise. Press releases make fundraising look like winning. But real company-building is not about who raised the most money. It is about who can survive, execute, grow efficiently, and build something valuable without losing control of the business too early. A $3M seed round with focus, discipline, and a clean cap table can be more powerful than a $50M round that comes with pressure the company is not ready for. Founders need to stop measuring their progress against someone else’s announcement. A raise is not the victory. The company is the victory. Are we in an AI bubble? Maybe. Will many AI startups fail? Yes. Do $100M seed rounds make sense? Not always. Do every “growth round” and mega-financing deal still feel like traditional venture capital? Maybe not. But one thing is clear: The amount of money moving through AI, startups, venture capital, and private markets right now is unlike anything we have seen before. VCs are deploying capital aggressively because the upside has changed. When one winning company can create a $60B, $100B, or even trillion-dollar outcome, investors are willing to overpay, move fast, and take bigger risks. Some funds will lose a lot of money. Some founders will raise at valuations they may never grow into. Some companies will become cautionary stories. But some will become the next generation-defining platforms. That is what makes this moment so powerful and so dangerous at the same time. AI is not just another startup trend. It is a venture reset. The rules of capital, growth, valuation, infrastructure, and exits are being rewritten in real time. For better or worse, this is one of the most important venture moments of our lifetime. Compliance shouldn't slow your startup down—it should be built into the product from day one. In this episode, Sriram Santhanam, Head of Startups, AWS India, shares why founders should treat compliance as a product feature, not just a legal requirement, and how building it early creates a stronger foundation for growth. Because the best startups don't add compliance later. They build it in from the start. 🎧 Watch now on Crafting Bharat’s YouTube Channel. youtu.be/ipizXD0zi2w @awscloud @HTSmartcast @newsreachindia #AWS #AWSIndia #StartupIndia #Compliance #DPDP #DataPrivacy #CloudComputing #FounderJourney #TechStartups #Innovation #BusinessGrowth #CraftingBharat
