Αυτό είναι και το πραγματικό νόημα μεγάλων επιστημονικών έργων, όπως ο Μεγάλος Επιταχυντής Αδρονίων. Έργων που πολλές φορές φαίνονται μακρινά από την καθημερινότητά μας, που κοστίζουν δισεκατομμύρια και που δύσκολα εξηγούνται με όρους άμεσης οικονομικής απόδοσης. Κι όμως, στα χρόνια λειτουργίας του, ο LHC συνέβαλε σε μια από τις σημαντικότερες επιστημονικές ανακαλύψεις της εποχής μας, την ανακάλυψη του μποζονίου Higgs το 2012. Βοήθησε να επιβεβαιωθεί ένα θεμελιώδες κομμάτι της κατανόησής μας για το πώς αποκτούν μάζα τα σωματίδια και πώς λειτουργεί η ύλη στο πιο βασικό της επίπεδο. Τώρα ο LHC μπαίνει σε μια μεγάλη φάση αναβάθμισης, ώστε να επιστρέψει γύρω στο 2030 ως ένας ακόμη πιο ισχυρός επιταχυντής, ικανός να παράγει πολύ περισσότερα δεδομένα για τα βαθύτερα ερωτήματα της φυσικής. Η βασική επιστήμη δεν αποδίδει πάντα άμεσα. Δεν παράγει πάντα κάτι που φαίνεται αύριο το πρωί στην καθημερινότητά μας.
