Morocco’s recent performances in football have attracted global attention.
For me, the deeper story lies beneath the surface.
In 2017, the Director General of Morocco’s National Agricultural Research System said to me:
“Eric, even if we do not harvest a single grain for five years, we will not need to import grain from anywhere. Our reserves are solid.”
That statement stayed with me.
Morocco invested in research, institutions and human capital, including world-class universities such as Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P).
Today, the results can be seen in food security, industrial development, scientific capacity and sporting excellence.
It invites a question for Ghana:
If we experienced two consecutive seasons of poor rainfall, how confident would we be in our food reserves, research systems and response mechanisms?
National competitiveness is built over decades through deliberate investment in knowledge, people and institutions.
Research and innovation are strategic national assets.
