Gov. Abbott tells data center developers to BYOR to Texas: Last week, the @TexasTribune published an excellent column by Texas Governor @GregAbbott_TX outlining a broad regulatory framework for data centers amid concerns from rural communities about their impact on residential neighborhoods, which should serve as code to developers to “bring your own resources” (BYOR). The #TexasTribune column quoted Gov. Abbott as saying, “I made clear already: Any AI data center even thinking about coming here — they got to bring their own money, bring their own power, reuse their own water and do it in a way that reduces the cost of electricity for residents across our state,” he said. “We must eliminate the tax break they are getting. They must be responsible for funding their own projects here in Texas. We will get that done.” Multiple interconnected issues have led communities to mount resistance to data centers moving near their neighborhoods. The growing demand for data centers across the country, mostly in rural areas, is driven by #AI and #cloud computing, which are fueling their expansion and requiring significant #energy storage, #water resources, and land, among others. On June 17, AI Now Sphere released a one-stop shop column on #DataCenter knowledge, covering their purpose, values, environmental footprint, and the pros and cons of their development, which is linked in the comments section below. Amid the resistance, #BigTech firms are seeking middle ground. The AI Now Sphere Reading Challenge: Next week, I’m going to take a complex and intimidating, or uninteresting, depending on your taste in literature, tech-related topic, and turn it into something you’ll actually enjoy reading. You won’t just understand it; you’ll remember it and feel confident discussing it with anyone. There will be no boring explanations and no confusing tech, government, or legal jargon, just clear, engaging insight from start to finish. Next week’s topic: The Quantum Computing Effect on AI Right now, we can hardly grasp what we will eventually call “traditional AI,” so how will #QuantumAI change the game we are currently struggling to figure out? #AI models currently run on “classical” computers; future #quantum computers could potentially train AI dramatically faster by evaluating many possible solutions simultaneously. Quantum computers use highly advanced properties that let them explore many possible answers at the same time and link pieces of information together in powerful ways, while today’s regular computers work step‑by‑step using simple 0s and 1s. If you think today’s solutions are found super-fast by computers, when quantum properties become commonplace, you will refer to the new output speed as faster than light, aka “superluminal”. What will the following week’s AI-related topic be? You pick and put it in the comments below.
