India's next major urban transport innovation may not run on roads or rails.
It could glide across the water.
📍 𝗦𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗿 is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a Kochi-style Water Metro, with support from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
📍 The proposed project is estimated at around ₹𝟵𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗲 and plans to connect 𝗗𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 and the 𝗝𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘂𝗺 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 through a network of electric and hybrid ferries, floating terminals, and integrated urban transport.
📍 The initiative aims to reduce road congestion, improve daily mobility, promote sustainable transportation, and strengthen tourism, while creating a modern public transport system uniquely suited to Srinagar's geography.
The most interesting part isn't that Srinagar is building another public transport system.
It's that India is beginning to view waterways as urban mobility corridors.
Cities have traditionally expanded through roads, flyovers, and metro rail. But water transport offers another dimension—particularly in cities with rivers, lakes, and extensive waterfronts.
If successfully implemented, Srinagar could become India's second Water Metro city, demonstrating how natural water bodies can be transformed into efficient, low-emission transport networks.
As India's cities continue to grow, future mobility may rely on a combination of roads, metro rail, regional rail, and waterways, rather than any single mode of transport.
Which Indian city do you think could benefit the most from a Water Metro after Kochi and Srinagar?
