An analysis of more than 5,000 images created with Stable Diffusion found that it takes racial and gender disparities to extremes — worse than those found in the real world. Here's what @Leonardonclt and I found: bloomberg.com/graphics/2023-…

So: is this merely procedural and fifa going through the motions (possibly with a view to this ending up in CAS one day)… orrrr is the maddest story of the World Cup about to get even madder …

You tell em, Sepp Blatter.
Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies. If a U.S. President intervenes with the FIFA President — and a player is suddenly cleared before a World Cup knockout match — the question is unavoidable: Quo vadis, FIFA? Football must never become a playground for political power. #FIFA #WorldCup #GianniInfantino #DonaldTrump

It’s not Gianni Infantino’s place to change the structure of the game.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino on hydration break at England game: “After an intense start to both halves, England used their hydration breaks well to regroup, reorganise and get on the front foot before finding the net twice in the final 15 minutes. These breaks are so important to give players a break during tournament play, while also allowing all coaches a dedicated moment in every match - not just depending on the weather conditions - to engage directly with their players. Overall, this was another fantastic FIFA World Cup contest involving two great teams - in a fantastic venue in Atlanta.”

every successful sports league in the world has discovered that structured and predictable gametimes function to ritualize the fan experience and maximize both viewership and the build of drama before matches what this world cup presumes is, what if they didn't

This is my issue with VAR (and for that matter NBA challenges as well). It often ends up with a standard that's often far more strict than any referee applies just because you can go back and look super-closely and slowly.
That was never a penalty for Belgium. If it's taking the ref and VAR five minutes to decide then maybe it's not an obvious error and it's best to stick with the on field decision. Senegal choked from 2-0 up but deserved a shootout. Brutal way to go out. #BELSEN

Mitchell Robinson was a personality unlike any I’ve ever covered. My column on his surprising success story in New York — a tale of naïveté, immaturity and injuries becoming rebounds, big money and an NBA championship. nypost.com/2026/07/01/sports…

Mitchell Robinson's eight years with the Knicks should go down as a tremendous success story. Second-round pick from humble beginnings who didn't just stick in the league — he became an all-time rebounder, top-notch defender, well-liked teammate and key cog on a title team.

So on that Germany loss, I didn't agree with the goal being overturned (and I have to imagine it really messed with Tah's head) but Germany didn't look like they deserved the win either. Team was a mess this whole tournament. Is DFB back at a 2000-like total system rebuild?

🚨 Bastian Schweinsteiger on Jonathan Tah missing his penalty for Germany against Paraguay: 🗣️ “I honestly think that disallowed goal never left Jonathan Tah’s mind. Imagine believing you’ve scored the goal that sends your country through, celebrating with your teammates, and then having it taken away by VAR. Moments like that stay with you.” “When he walked up to take that penalty, I don’t think he was completely free mentally. People will ask why he missed such a huge penalty, but football is psychological as much as it is technical. I genuinely believe that first goal being ruled out affected him. It would affect almost any player.” “I won’t point the finger at Jonathan Tah because penalties are taken by brave players, not cowards. He had the courage to step forward when others could have hidden. But I can’t stop thinking that if that first goal had stood, Germany wouldn’t even have been in a penalty shootout. Football can be unbelievably cruel, and tonight Jonathan Tah suffered the harshest side of it.” {@Sports }
