Helping an aspiring American become a citizen might sound like a big commitment. The reality for Susie was simply a few hour-long video calls and a stack of flashcards.🇺🇸✨ Every week, Susie logged on and helped Lolav study for a very important exam: flashcards, practice questions, the hundred small facts that stand between a newcomer and citizenship. They never met in person. But what Lolav remembers most is not the facts. It is that someone showed up,week after week, and reminded her she was not doing this alone. Lolav came to Nashville from the Kurdish region of Iraq in 2022, rebuilding a life that had been upended years earlier. She set her sights on becoming American and started studying for the exam. Susie, a longtime volunteer two time zones away, became the person in her corner. This past March, Lolav passed the U.S. citizenship exam and became a new American.
