It is Day 4 of our 30-day countdown, and today I’m opening up about one of the biggest, most expensive mistakes I made early on - overspending heavily on branded items.
When you’re excited about a new startup, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of wanting to look the part before you’ve actually proven the product. I wanted everything to look premium from day one, so we poured millions into high-end branded merchandise, customized packaging, and physical assets.
Looking back, it was a classic rookie founder mistake. Here is what that experience taught me the hard way:
Your customers don't buy your product because your hoodies look cool; they buy it because your software solves their problems.
Capital is the lifeblood of a young startup, and every Naira spent on vanity items is a Naira stolen from product development and customer acquisition.
True branding isn't a logo on a shirt - it's the reliability, speed, and trust your platform delivers when a user needs it most.
We learned our lesson, adjusted our focus, and redirected our energy into perfecting the actual engine powering
Plug.ng.
To my fellow founders: ignore the urge to look flashy early on. Keep your head down, protect your runway, and pour your resources into building a product that speaks for itself.
Have you ever made a vanity purchase for your business that you later regretted? Let’s laugh about our mistakes in the comments!
