Let me gist you about my first day at work😂😂.
It was my worst day in that office. and also my best day in that office.
So it was my first day at work and I was famished. I couldn't wait to eat breakfast before leaving home because I didn't want to be late. So by 11 a.m. I was already feeling the pangs of hunger.
I kept wondering; Do they serve free lunch in this office? Do I have to go downstairs to buy food? Is there even a restaurant in this office complex?
So many questions languished in my head while I writhed silently in the pain of hunger.
I thought of asking someone, but I felt timid. It was my first day. I didn't know anybody. I didn't even know how to start a conversation. My face had been down the entire day.
Then, around 1 p.m., I started smelling the aroma of rice and stew.
I looked up. Two cooks were carrying plates of food around.
"Ah They serve lunch here." I murmured silently as I smiled to myself. I felt relaxed and I licked my chapped lips.
The cooks started serving. They passed food across my desk. Behind my desk. In front of my desk. Around my desk. Everywhere except my table 😂. Everybody was getting food except me.
I stayed calm. But deep down, I felt like crying. Few minutes later, I noticed they've stopped serving. I could hear the clinking of spoons against plates. People were eating, laughing, talking happily.
My stomach growled.
My head pounded.
I shut my eyes painfully.
Then I stood up. My legs felt weak as I made my way to the kitchen.
There they were. The two cooks. Eating. I looked at them and said, "You've not served me my food."
The two girls looked up. Then looked at each other. And immediately their faces changed.
"Oh my God, we're so sorry!" one of them said.
"We forgot we have a new staff," the other added.
"We didn't even notice you while we were serving."
They immediately got up.
"Please go back to your desk. We'll serve it right away and bring it to you."
"No please," I replied instantly. "I'm too hungry to go back and wait. Serve me right here."
They laughed. I just smiled weakly. My empty stomach didn't allow me to laugh.
They served me my food. I sat down with them in the kitchen and ate. While I eat I gisted with them. We laughed, we knew each other more, they gave me the warmest welcome.
Oh and the rice tasted like a reward from heaven😋
