Copy-Paste Architecture: Are We Designing or Replicating? There’s a quiet shift happening in Lagos’ built environment. We are no longer designing buildings. We are replicating them.Walk through Lekki, Ikoyi, Ajah. -Same glass фасades. -Same box forms. -Same “modern luxury” aesthetic. -Different plots. Same buildings. This is what I call Copy-Paste Architecture. Pre-designed templates reused across multiple developments with minimal contextual adaptation. Why is it happening? -Speed to market -Cost efficiency -Social media influence -Weak demand for originality But here’s the issue: -Lagos is not London. -It is not Dubai. -Yet many buildings here behave like they are. The consequences: -Poor ventilation -Heat retention -Flood vulnerability -High maintenance costs Beyond performance, there’s a deeper loss: Identity. Cities should have character. We are building visual monotony and let’s be clear, this is systemic. Clients want familiar aesthetics. Developers want quick ROI. Design is treated as optional. But architecture is not just about looks. It is strategy. It is climate response. It is human experience. If we continue like this, Lagos risks becoming a city of copies with no original voice. The solution? -Context-driven design. -Local materials. -Climate intelligence. -Intentional creativity.
