This is why the M25 was at a standstill near Staines today. Footage from a bridge shows a car flipped onto its roof between the lanes near the Staines and Egham stretch, with another vehicle stopped alongside it, debris across the carriageway and traffic queuing as far back as you can see. Thousands are heading to Ruislip Lido in this heat. Here’s what many don’t realise: swimming there is banned. A woman who has lived beside the lido for 25 years has gone public over how the site is run, telling the Local Democracy Reporting Service there is “nothing in place to manage the place safely” when it’s busy. A huge tree has come down in Uxbridge. The tree fell across St John’s Road, blocking the road by the mini roundabout and causing chaos for drivers trying to get through. Google Maps jumped the gun on this one 😭 Driving through Hayes this week, Google rerouted us off the A312 and straight down the brand new link road that will eventually connect Hayes to Southall through The Green Quarter, from the Parkway to Beaconsfield Road in about two minutes. One problem: the road isn’t open yet. It’s still an active construction site, and halfway down it was gated off, with security confirming it should never have been on the map. The NHS is going to reward you for walking. A new scheme, part of the NHS 10-year health plan, will challenge people to walk 30 minutes a day, with daily walks tracked digitally and streaks to keep you going, the same habit trick used by Snapchat and Duolingo. Those who complete the challenge will be eligible for rewards, which could include vouchers and discounts. The aim is to sign up more than 100,000 people, which organiser Sir Brendan Foster says would count as the biggest marathon in history. The health case is real too. According to the NHS, walking 30 minutes five times a week could add up to four extra years of healthy life, while nearly 12 million adults in England currently do less than 30 minutes of activity a week.
