There is a reason that advice is free. It worked for the person asked, but that advice is unlikely to work for us. Our situation is different. The world has moved forward. New solutions developed, and new challenges are present. What has worked in the past is unlikely to work precisely in the future.

The biggest career mistake I've seen smart young people make: overpricing themselves at the wrong moment. You're 23, you win a hackathon or build a viral side project, and get some buzz. People start coming to you, and it feels like you're a 10. But you're actually a 7 who looks like an 8 because you're young and the curve is pointing up. You start turning stuff down, waiting for the perfect thing, and holding out. And before you know it, 4-5 years have gone by. The wave has moved on, a new hotter generation has come through, and you're wondering what happened. You're now a 4, but you still think you're a 7/8 and hence can't take the step back that would get you back in the game. You were hot. You just weren't as hot as you thought. Instead of riding the slope, you priced yourself off it.
