【PolyU’s Professor Liu Ai-Qun Shares Quantum Technology Trends and Cybersecurity Insights at Legislative Council】 Professor Liu Ai-Qun, Director of the Research Institute of Quantum Technology (RIQT) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was invited to the Legislative Council to deliver a critical seminar on “Cybersecurity for Hong Kong in the Quantum Era”. He engaged with Legislative Council members of the LegCo T5 Group and the Panel on Information Technology and Broadcasting, as well as representatives from China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK), to exchange strategic views on safeguarding Hong Kong’s digital future. Quantum technology has been identified as a flagship strategic sector in China’s 15th Five‑Year Plan, ranking first among six pivotal future industries. Drawing on his expertise, Professor Liu highlighted the unprecedented cybersecurity and financial risks posed by quantum computing. He explained that future quantum computers could break mainstream commercial encryption within hours, a task that would take classical computers thousands of years, underscoring the urgent need for proactive preparation to protect Hong Kong’s position as a global financial hub. To address these emerging threats, PolyU’s RIQT team is advancing world‑class research in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post‑Quantum Cryptography (PQC). The team has independently developed low‑cost, high key-rates, and scalable quantum chips, successfully completing security trials on Hong Kong’s first 55‑kilometre chip‑based quantum communication network. These breakthroughs have earned strong recognition from the international quantum research community. Looking ahead, Professor Liu announced upcoming quantum networking trials in partnership with CMHK. This collaboration will focus on building cross‑border and metropolitan hybrid chip‑based QKD networks, laying the foundation for a highly secure, long‑distance quantum fibre communication network in Hong Kong. These milestones not only demonstrate Hong Kong’s capability to establish a world-class secure quantum network but also align with national priorities under the Nation's 15th Five-Year Plan. As the HKSAR Government formulates its first five-year development plan, PolyU’s breakthroughs will support deeper integration into the broader national quantum technology landscape. The members of Legislative Council, including Mr Duncan Chiu and his colleagues representing the Information Technology sector, T5 Group and the Panel on Information Technology and Broadcasting, and also Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government have expressed strong support for PolyU’s chip-based quantum network research and innovation. #PolyU #QuantumTechnology #Cybersecurity #LegislativeCouncil
