“billions of rufiyaa in taxpayers' money were spent creating new land, only for much of it to become the private property and commercial asset of roughly 2,000 individuals”
Yameen admin reclaimed and developed HM Phase II but did not freely distribute a single plot of land freely and started the ground works of building planned city.
Solih admin then distributed virtually all available plots freely to individuals as a “basic housing” need.
Muizz admin is moving to allow commercial use on all that.
So, billions of rufiyaa in taxpayers' money were spent creating new land, only for much of it to become the private property and commercial asset of roughly 2,000 individuals, given away freely under the pretext of providing “basic housing”
The greatest loss is the opportunity cost.
HM P-2 could have remained a strategic public asset, giving future generations the flexibility to build a truly planned city, increase housing supply, create commercial districts when needed, and reduce dependence on private landlords in the Greater Male region.
Instead, each five-year government has treated a once-in-a-generation national asset as something to dispose of.
The public watched as Solih distributed the lands freely and now watches Muizz convert much of its value into private commercial assets.
If we continue accepting this, every government will keep making irreversible decisions that permanently reduce the options available to future generations.
A nation cannot serve everyone when long-term national assets are repeatedly transferred into private hands without a broader vision.
Countries improve only when citizens, especially those who are educated and understand the long-term consequences ( PNC Gov have lost of them but are silent ) hold governments accountable before irreversible decisions are made, not after.
