The Indian men's volleyball team bagged the bronze medal at the AVC Men's Nations Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad. Before the tournament, India was ranked around 60th in the world. By the end of the event, the team had climbed to 42nd and is now ranked 7th in Asia. That is clear progress and deserves appreciation.
At the same time, I think it is important to keep things in perspective. I am seeing a lot of misinformation and exaggerated claims being spread online. It's too early to use words like "rise" yet. For me, that word should be reserved for something bigger, such as winning a medal at the Asian Games or the Asian Championship.
The reason I say this is because Indian volleyball has shown promise before. India has won 3 medals at the Asian Games in the past. Even in the last two decades, they finished fifth at the 2002 Asian Games and again at the 2014 Asian Games and beat stronger sides than they did here at the AVC Nations Cup. Back in 2014 Asia Cup, India had defeated Asian powerhouses like Japan & Iran.
At the junior level, India reached the final of the 2003 U-19 World Championship and the semifinal of the 2009 U-21 World Championship. The talent has always been there.
The problem has been converting that talent into sustained success. Administrative issues and years of instability have held the sport back. While most Indian sports federations have their problems, volleyball has suffered more than most. The lack of international exposure has hurt players badly, and that is one of the biggest reasons why Indian volleyball has struggled to build momentum despite producing talented athletes.
That is why this run feels special. The crowd support in Ahmedabad was excellent and showed that Indian fans will turn up for volleyball when the team performs well. The players deserve immense credit for what they achieved despite the challenges they have faced.
In fact, I believe this team had the potential to win the tournament. The semifinal loss showed that the players still need more exposure to high-pressure international matches. That comes only from playing stronger opponents more regularly.
The launch of the Prime Volleyball League in 2022 has been a positive step and it is already helping the sport. Now the challenge is to build on that foundation. Instead of making unrealistic predictions about where Indian volleyball will be in five or ten years, the focus should be on achievable targets.
Next realistic steps:
Break into the top 30 in the world rankings
Qualify for the World Championship (32-team event)
Letโs build momentum steadily instead of making wild predictions. Claims like โIndia beat Brazilโ are outright lies and do no good.
One step forward, now we need the next one. No need for massive predictions, just steady improvement and better management.
