Dear Holland America Guest Relations Team,
We booked the special “America’s 250th Celebration: Stars & Stripes Voyage” (“Celebrating 250” sailing) aboard the Zuiderdam, departing Boston roundtrip on July 4, 2026. We chose this cruise specifically because Holland America’s advertisements and promotions led us to believe we would enjoy an incredible, memorable experience with fireworks viewed from Boston Harbor as a highlight of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The promotions highlighted the ship positioning in the harbor for a unique sailaway celebration featuring the city’s iconic Fourth of July fireworks.
Unfortunately, the reality fell far short of what was advertised. After waiting several hours on the evening of July 4th, by approximately 10:30 PM we discovered that the fireworks were took place on the other side of town. Our view of the distant celebration was completely blocked by tall buildings, making it impossible for anyone on board to see or enjoy the display. This left passengers extremely upset, frustrated, and deeply disappointed after hours of anticipation for what was promoted as a signature patriotic moment.
Holland America should have known better about the actual visibility and logistics. Promoting a “truly unique sailaway celebration” with Boston Harbor fireworks when the view was obstructed and the display was not accessible from the ship’s position represents a significant gap between the marketing promises and the delivered experience.
This letdown was especially disappointing given the historic importance of America’s 250th anniversary. We could have instead celebrated in Washington, D.C., or other locations that provided genuine, unobstructed patriotic festivities worthy of the occasion.
To make up for the widespread disappointment and the misrepresentation in your promotional materials, we strongly believe Holland America should provide major compensation to passengers on this sailing. This could take the form of a meaningful partial refund of the cruise fare, generous future cruise credits, or other substantial remedies that reflect the level of letdown experienced by all guests.
