Boston police are investigating five separate overnight shootings late Saturday and early Sunday that left 13 victims, including two fatalities, across Roxbury and Dorchester. The incidents occurred amid large gatherings involving fireworks, alcohol, and firearms during a busy holiday weekend period. Mayor Michelle Wu called it a "long and difficult night," stressing that large gatherings with guns are not a recipe for peaceful celebrations, while Police Commissioner Michael Cox noted officers were also injured by illegal fireworks. No arrests have been made.

The Massachusetts Senate has passed a major energy bill that leaves the policies behind the state’s energy affordability crisis largely untouched. In the hours before the final vote, senators turned down several proposed changes. These included efforts to slow the growth of Mass Save spending and to require the Department of Energy Resources to regularly report the costs of state-directed energy procurements to the Legislature. Another amendment that would have added new obstacles before natural gas service could be extended to new customers came within a single vote of passing. Rather than confronting the real drivers of Massachusetts’ high energy costs, the Senate rejected practical steps to improve transparency and rein in spending, while nearly moving forward with fresh restrictions on natural gas connections.
