A sub-inspector has been suspended after he was allegedly caught stealing ₹20,000 from a truck driver's cabin and was later assaulted by the driver on National Highway 34 in
#Hamirpur district
#UttarPradesh. Police have registered a case and ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9:30 am near the Yamuna bridge on NH-34. The accused has been identified as Sub-Inspector Girish Mishra, who was posted on court security duty in Hamirpur.
According to the truck driver, Manish, he had picked up the uniformed officer near the Ghata Khand area while returning after delivering a load of gravel, believing him to be a regular passenger. The journey continued until the vehicle reached near the Aliyapur toll plaza under the Sajeeti police station limits.
The driver alleged that he later discovered ₹20,000 missing from the truck's cabin and suspected the officer had concealed the cash inside his uniform. When confronted, the sub-inspector allegedly got off the truck and left the spot in a van parked near the toll plaza.
Police said the truck driver chased the van for nearly 13 kilometres. After the vehicle crossed the Yamuna bridge, the officer reportedly got down and was confronted by the driver. The driver alleged that the missing cash was recovered from the officer's uniform.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, appears to show the driver slapping the uniformed officer multiple times during the confrontation. The officer's uniform was also reportedly torn in the scuffle as bystanders gathered at the scene.
Following the incident, local residents alerted the UP-112 emergency response service, after which the officer was taken to the local police station.
Circle Officer Yashpal Singh said a case has been registered at Kotwali Nagar Police Station based on the truck driver's complaint and the viral video. The sub-inspector has been suspended with immediate effect, and a departmental inquiry has been ordered.
Police said further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
