I have been seeing attempts by people trying to rebuild Shenzhen, and I think this is great !!
What I noticed is that people usually miss that Shenzhen is not only good at manufacturing ; it also has the best supply chain for it. Many other places have good end-assembly processes (the new iPhones are being made in India^^)
So, to the people reindustrialising America. I have only spent a little time in Shenzhen, and you can never spend enough time in Shenzhen, but I think step one is to open a large diversity of factories. We have to find a way to incentivise people to open them.
And this is really hard, because how do you convince the avg desk job person to get up and start a difficult business with a 5–15% profit margin instead of opening an OF account? (starting either requires the same level of mental madness)
In Shenzhen, it is hard, but it is still easier than in the US. With subsidies, low-interest loans, and a large available operator workforce
So yeah, open many factories until we have hundreds of interdependent suppliers. And before that, make it easy for people to open a factory
