🚘 Hyundai says #NextStartsNow for 2026 #FifaWorldCup and beyond. But when will next start on steel? The steel in Hyundai's cars is still made with coal.
#DidYouKnow? Up to 70% of a car's supply chain (Scope 3) emissions come from one material: steel.
Traditionally, steel has been made by burning coal at over 1,000 degrees to smelt iron ore — releasing massive amounts of CO2.
Green steel alternatives already exist. Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) can cut emissions significantly when powered by renewable electricity. Hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (H2-DRI) replaces coal with green hydrogen, eliminating most emissions from conventional steelmaking.
Competing automakers are already moving. @volvocars, @BMW & @MercedesBenz have all partnered with low-carbon steel suppliers and set targets to scale greener steel in future vehicle production.
Hyundai Motor Group owns its own steelmaker. Hyundai Steel supplies around 72% of the steel in its vehicles.
Few automakers have this level of influence over their steel supply chain. Hyundai does. Yet it's lagging behind the competition.
How Hyundai can unlock the green steel advantage:

🔹 Set clear, time-bound green steel targets backed by a transition roadmap
🔹 Fully disclose steel-related Scope 3 emissions and progress toward reduction
