My remarks at the graduation ceremony held at Sufiya Law College, Shettihalli, Tumakuru
Although the Preamble to the Constitution gives great importance to equality, there is a need for serious reflection on how far it has been implemented in law and society. Law graduates must continue learning and grow into skilled and competent advocates.
In the Supreme Court and High Courts, a majority of litigants choose only a few advocates because they have earned trust through deep legal knowledge and effective advocacy. The new generation of lawyers must strive to achieve the same level of expertise.
India has more than 1,500 law colleges, and thousands of law graduates enter the profession every year. Yet, the large number of pending cases in courts remains a matter of concern. Further judicial reforms are necessary to ensure faster disposal of cases.
India is expanding its influence in the legal field at the international level, with Indian legal experts representing the country on global platforms. At the same time, cybercrime has emerged as a major challenge, and our legal framework must be further strengthened to tackle it effectively.
At the time of Independence, India’s literacy rate was only around 12%. Today, it has risen to nearly 80%. Those who earn a law degree must see their role not merely as a profession, but as a responsibility to protect the law and serve justice.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar gave India a strong Constitution, which remains the foundation of our democracy. If the Constitution is weakened, democracy too will be weakened. Therefore, protecting constitutional values is the responsibility of every citizen.
Article 51A of the Constitution, along with Articles 12 to 35, clearly outlines the Fundamental Duties and Fundamental Rights of citizens. Only when people understand both their rights and duties can the ideals of democracy be upheld in their true spirit.
Madhugiri MLA Shri K.N. Rajanna, former MLA and Chairman of HMS Educational Institutions Dr. Shafi Ahmed, Adichunchanagiri University scientist Dr. Prashanth Kalappa, Superintendent of Police Shri Ashok K.V., District Guarantee Implementation Committee Chairman Shri Chandrashekhar Gowda, and several others were present at the event.
