Agents are starting to change the shape of cloud infrastructure. The current wave of AI is about generating tokens. The next wave is about executing work. Agents will think, call tools, use memory, query databases, coordinate workflows, and run inside secure CPU-based environments. So the infrastructure stack for AI can’t stop at generating tokens. It needs CPUs, memory, storage, networking, databases, sandboxes, inference, and orchestration working together. “When we start consuming 4 to 5 quintillion tokens per year, 70% of the tokens are going to be generated by agents,” @digitalocean CEO @paddix said. AI token demand is projected to surge by 2030, with agents expected to be one of the biggest drivers, according to Srinivasan. That shift means agentic workloads could become “multiple orders of magnitude bigger” than human-driven workflows, with agents requiring “a significant amount of compute: GPUs, CPUs, databases, memory, and cloud primitives all in one cloud.” Supported by DigitalOcean.
