Last weekend in Zambia, Anthony Welsh knocked out former World Heavyweight Champion Chris Byrd in a round for the WABA Title The 55 year old Byrd was hurt multiple times in the contest which was a very difficult watch.

Boxing hasn’t had a great year for consistent fights. Last night delivered some solid bouts and a fantastic main event. The sport needs more nights like that but what it really needs is more main event superstars. Those guys your friends text you about on a Saturday night that don’t really follow Boxing. This sport is struggling to fill that void.

Ennis came out in that first two minutes and set the tone behind a jab that had success. I don’t think it’s fair to knock Xander’s game plan because it’s very possible he felt he couldn’t outbox Ennis immediately, and started to press forward more.

Great fight last night! Ennis really showed heart in fighting through that 3rd round when Zayas had him badly hurt. Really hope Vergil Ortiz Jr gets his situation handled. That fight would be fireworks for as long as it lasts. 50/50 fight in my opinion.

Women’s professional boxing is in its infancy as a mass sport. Greatness started many years ago with the pioneer Regina Halmich. Then came the era of Christy Martin, who attracted a real audience for the first time for women’s boxing. Laila Ali set a new bar and Ann Wolfe made her mark as well. Cecilia Braehus become the first undisputed champion. Amanda Serrano has achieved the same and also won world titles in 7 divisions. Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields have both achieved Olympic Golds and undisputed status. Holly Holm achieved elite world titles in boxing and MMA. All of them and many more (like Jackie Nava) should be celebrated and all have contributed to where the sport is today with better distribution and investment to allow women’s boxing to continue to grow. Greatness is not self anointed. It is earned. And all of these athletes have earned it and paved the way for the future. The future is bright and MVP is proud to be a part of it.

For the last few years Boxing has been great on matchmaking with the big names, and giving the fans the fights they want to see. 2026 is not one of those years. There’s been a few, but not nearly enough.
