Atheists may mock Christians for believing in an eternal God, but what do they believe? Where did matter come from? Why does anything exist? Where did energy come from? Why does time exist? Why does space exist? Is matter eternal? Did matter suddenly come from nowhere for no reason? They have no answers! They can have all sorts of opinions and beliefs, but the bottom line is that they have no definitive answer at all. The answers aren’t in atheism—they’re in Genesis!

Why haven’t aliens visited earth yet? Well, I recently saw an article that gave three reasons why extraterrestrial visits might not be occurring. I’ll share those with you, and then I’ll offer a reason of my own. According to the article, “a third of the public believes aliens are here” and “what we know about the universe suggests aliens may exist” (despite there being absolutely no evidence that aliens do, in fact, exist). So why aren’t little green men making an appearance? Well, the author gives three reasons. 1.Space is just too big, and it would take way too long for any aliens to reach us. Even if travel at the speed of light were possible, the phenomenon of time dilation means time would move slower for the aliens on their lightning-fast spacecraft, so interstellar travel would make them “time exiles” on their home planet, so they probably wouldn’t make the trip. 2.It would take too much fuel. The energy requirements for such a trip are just too vast, making it basically impossible. 3.Our atmosphere and environmental conditions could be toxic to alien life. After all, who knows how they evolved? Maybe oxygen is corrosive to them and life-sustaining to us. So it’s not that aliens don’t exist, argues this article, it’s just that it’s unlikely they’d visit us—but if we don’t look for them, we won’t ever find them and we won’t ever know! That’s the logic that ends the article, anyway. But here’s my reason for why aliens haven’t yet sent spaceships to earth: They don’t exist. That’s right! We haven’t had extraterrestrial visitors because there aren’t any out there to make the trip! Why do I say this? Well, because I have a different starting point. The majority of those who believe in aliens have an evolutionary worldview. In that view, life evolved on earth, so given enough time, life must’ve evolved somewhere else too. We aren’t unique; we aren’t special—so it must be fairly easy, given enough time, to make life. But I reject that worldview because I start with God’s Word. According to God’s Word, God created life, formed earth to be inhabited, and created the heavens as markers of times and seasons and to vividly display his glorious handiwork. It’s earth that is the focus of God’s attention, and it’s Adam’s race that plunged the whole cosmos into a broken, groaning state. (Think about it: If intelligent aliens exist, they didn’t sin in Adam. They aren’t related to the first Adam, so they can’t be saved by the last Adam, and yet they suffer the effects of the curse because all of creation is groaning, as Romans 8:22 says.) It’s to earth that God sent his Son to redeem a fallen humanity. From a biblical-worldview perspective, intelligent aliens don’t exist, and it’s highly unlikely that other lifeforms exist out in the universe. People desperately want aliens to exist so they can know they aren’t alone and that there’s something else out there. But there is someone else out there—the Creator God. And he created this earth, has miraculously moved throughout history, and visited earth himself in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ, who died the death we deserve, rose from the grave, and offers eternal life with him to all who will repent and believe. You don’t need aliens to know you’re not alone—God has given you his Word and the offer of himself! Remember: “The heavens are the heavens of Yahweh, But the earth He has given to the sons of men” (Psalm 115:16).

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter” (Matthew 7:21). Scripture is clear that not everyone who claims to be in Christ is actually in Christ. There are many who profess Christ with their mouths, but their hearts are far from him. And how do we know? Because they don’t do what he says! “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Instead of loving Christ as he’s commanded—with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength—many of these professing Christians turn God’s grace into an excuse to sin, and so encourage others to do so. “For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ” (Jude 1:4). These people will quote the Bible, claim they love God, attend church, and seem very winsome or charming on the outside, but inside they are ravenous wolves seeking to destroy the flock of God. Now, of course, none of us can see the heart (the inside), but we can listen to what people say and watch the fruit that comes from their lives (and Jesus defines “good fruit” as obedience). So we take what people say and what they do and compare it against the authority of Scripture to see if it is true and if that person is someone we should listen to, follow, or—well—preach the gospel to! Of course, we do both of these things every day at @AiG, and we produce resources to equip you so you can turn around and equip your children and those around you. And if you’re someone who holds a position where you get to teach and influence others, it’s vital you are doing the same! We must raise up generations who know how to think biblically and who know what they believe and why they believe it.

New “death trap” spider discovered. One thing my home country of Australia is known for is our incredibly unique wildlife—kangaroos, koalas, and the platypus are perhaps the most iconic, but we can now add a new and very unique spider species to the list (it’s so new to science it doesn’t even have a species name yet): a spider that crafts a “spring-loaded, cone-shaped death trap.” This spider was discovered in North Queensland, in the rainforest area (I grew up in North Queensland). The unique catapult trap is fastened to a leaf and triggered by foraging green tree ants, who aggressively defend their territory. When they bite the silken base of the trap, the “silk tethers release and the structure hurls the ant upward.” This “feat of arachnid engineering has never previously been observed.” It appears that only one species of ant sets off the trap (the ant is amazing in itself: It blasts formic acid at predators and has “adhesive pads on its feet to help it carry heavy loads up trees”). It’s the only known spider to just hunt a single species. Researchers think the special slingshot method of hunting: “flings the ant from the foraging trail, reducing the risk that the spider will be swarmed by other workers. . . . However, it is still unknown why the green tree ant and no others approach the trap aggressively. One possibility, according to the study, may be that the spiders apply pheromones to the silk catapult that provoke only green tree ants, causing them to attack the cone and trigger its release.” This snare is incredibly effective “because it releases energy so rapidly that, relative to its size, it produces thousands of times more power than muscle can generate.” It’s a marvel of engineering, and the credit from the researchers and others quoted in the popular science article goes, of course, to evolutionary (blind-chance) processes. They assume an evolutionary arms race between the ants and spiders produced this method of hunting. It doesn’t matter how complex something is, people suppress the truth in unrighteousness (Romans 1) and refuse to give God glory for what he has made. But spiders spinning intricate webs to snag other insects for dinner and ants blasting formic acid at their enemies brings up a question, “Why is God’s creation filled with creatures who look designed to kill or avoid being killed?” Genesis gives us the answer! God’s original creation was “very good” (Genesis 1:31), and humans and animals were created to be vegetarian (Genesis 1:30), though it’s unclear if insects fall into the animal category. But when Adam and Eve sinned, creation fell, and now all of creation groans from the effects of sin. Some animals now eat other animals, and everything tries to avoid being eaten, and even insects are now a source of pain, difficulty, and even death for humans. It’s not the way it was designed to be—slingshot spiders and aggressive ants remind us that it’s a fallen world. God graciously provided for his creation, giving animals and even insects what they would need to survive and thrive in a world broken because of sin. And God has also given us what we need—the offer of salvation through Jesus Christ who paid the price for our sin when he died on the cross and then rose from the grave, conquering sin and death. God cares for the spiders and the ants, and he cares for us.

How do we understand an eternal God with no beginning and no end? It is difficult, impossible really, for us to understand because we are created, finite beings. The space, mass, and time universe we live in was created. We think in terms of everything having a beginning because we are finite beings who have a beginning. This means there will always be a faith aspect to understanding who God is. We can’t scientifically prove God exists because we don’t have all information, only God does. That’s why God’s Word states, “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). However, it’s important to understand this is not blind faith. It’s a faith that makes sense of what we observe in this world, and observational science in many ways (that’s for another post) confirms this faith over and over again. The history recorded in the Bible makes sense of the evidence we observe in the present in biology, geology, astronomy, and so on.

I once had a young boy about 10 years of age come up and ask me, “Sir, if God created us, who created God?” I said to him, “If someone made God then you would have to have a bigger God.” The boy replied, “Yes, sir.” I said, “But now, you have a problem, who made the bigger God? You would then need a bigger, bigger God who made the bigger God who made God.” I then said, “Now, you have a problem.” The boy said, “I know.” I then went on, “Who made the bigger, bigger God? Now, you would need a bigger, bigger, bigger God who made the bigger, bigger God who made the bigger God who made God.” The young boy understood. We could keep going back with bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger forever and then have to keep going. The only thing that makes sense is that you would have to have the biggest God of all, the infinite, eternal God of the Bible. The only one true God who has always existed. He had no beginning.

We all have a propensity to be our own god, just like Adam and Eve. We want to decide truth for ourselves. We see ourselves as being proud of what we know. We think we can reason correctly by ourselves and so we have that problem of intellectual pride wanting intellectual respectability. I believe this is why there is so much compromise in the church when it comes to God’s Word in Genesis. Our heart is such that we would rather trust man’s word than God’s Word, and so we have a problem with intellectual pride, and thus we cave to peer pressure. We must guard against this.

If it walks like a heron and eats like a heron and sounds like a heron . . . it’s a dinosaur in disguise! Now that’s weird. Well, that’s the basic logic of a newly revealed “dinosaur” species, Kank australis (of course, I’m exaggerating a bit—they don’t know what this creature sounded like, but you get the point!). The popular headline announcing this find declares, “Heron-Like, Fish-Eating Dinosaur from 70 Million Years Ago Discovered in Argentina.” What exactly does “heron-like” mean? According to the article, it means, “The cervical vertebrae of Kank show special structures for muscle attachment and the protection of neck blood vessels—features particularly important in modern birds with complex neck movements, such as herons. . . . “Their elongated snouts, numerous teeth and long, flexible necks suggest adaptations for fishing, similar to modern herons.” “Heron-like” sounds like it’s, well, like a heron! But in the evolutionary worldview, birds are dinosaurs, so this creature gets introduced to the world as a new dinosaur species, instead of as a new variety of heron-like bird. This find highlights the role evolutionary assumptions play in interpreting the past. The researchers found a small assemblage of fossil bones—a neck vertebra, a claw, and some teeth (they were all found in the same area and it’s assumed they belong together)—and then they used their evolutionary worldview (belief) to assign a date (70 million years) and a classification (a type of dinosaur). But just because a bird has teeth doesn't make it a dinosaur—we know that at least some ancient birds had teeth, including Archaeopteryx and Microraptor. Because of their evolutionary assumptions, they don’t see birdlike features and assume bird, they see birdlike features and assume dinosaur. It’s all about worldview! It’s ridiculous. In a biblical worldview, when we see bird features in a fossil, we assume that the creature was probably a bird! God created the various bird kinds on day five but the land creature kinds—including dinosaurs—on day six of creation week, and he made life to reproduce according to its kind, so one kind (like a dinosaur) won’t turn into another kind (like a bird). Rather, birds are birds and dinosaurs are dinosaurs! When you see headlines declaring a “birdlike” dinosaur has been discovered, go past the headline and take a look at what was actually discovered. Most likely, that “birdlike” dinosaur was probably a bird! Bottom line, they found a fossil bird!

“The average person eats a credit card’s worth of plastic every single week.” Ever heard that popular claim? Well, turns out that statistic, based on the high-end numbers of a 2019 study, is probably wildly wrong because scientists have overlooked a “surprising source” of sample contamination that’s “led to wildly exaggerated results”: standard plastic gloves. But what does this have to do with creation? According to a popular science article, “Scientists may have been unknowingly inflating microplastics pollution estimates, and the surprising source could be their own lab gloves. A University of Michigan study found that common nitrile and latex gloves release tiny particles called stearates, which closely resemble microplastics and can contaminate samples during testing. In some cases, this led to wildly exaggerated results, forcing researchers to track down the unexpected culprit.” Researchers will now need to revisit old datasets, using a new technique to separate out contamination from the real microplastics, to find the true quantity of microplastics. Now for the creation connection! The grad student who made a surprising discovery using testable, observable, and repeatable science (what we call observational science) showed how the microplastics research field was getting it completely wrong. Her new research, based on experimentation in the present, calls into question much of the previous research done on this particular topic. So what happens when scientists are wrong about something they can’t test? When it comes to answering questions about the past, we can’t do direct experiments in the same way because we’re dealing with history—it’s gone—all we have is the present. This historical science is not directly testable, observable, or repeatable (like the origins issue as that concerns the past). Rather, it’s interpretations of the evidence in the present, trying to make sense of what happened in the past. And interpretation requires a worldview (yes, everyone has a worldview!). The only way to ensure you have the right worldview for interpreting the evidence is to start with a perfect eyewitness account. And the only perfect eyewitness account is found in God’s Word. If we want to be sure we have the right framework for interpreting the evidence and we aren’t missing anything that would totally change our interpretations of the present—like a global flood, a young earth, or a perfect creation marred by sin—we must start with Scripture! Oh—and yes, evolutionists have had a massive number of wrong interpretations, and will continue to do so, as their worldview is based on fallible man’s word.
