Ulysses has raised $46M led by a16z American Dynamism. We are building The Ocean Company. The ocean is 71% of the planet. But it is less explored than Mars, and full of secrets, waiting to be told. It is the backbone of global defense. Home to the critical infrastructure that powers our world. And the key to the health of our planet. This frontier needs technology to protect and steward it. We are building it. And we need more builders Join us and explore the Great Blue Frontier: theoceancompany.com/careers

"There's no company like @UlyssesInc. There's nobody that's doing commercial, nature and defense. There's a $100 billion market waiting for us — and we want it all." @zaitoon on Ulysses's ambition to build the ocean company for Arena 008: At Sea. The biggest constraint on rebuilding America’s maritime industrial base is not steel, it’s talent. Great discussion @reindsummit on workforce readiness, Project Patriot Pipeline, and connecting more Americans to the mission of strengthening our national security.

The ocean covers 71% of our planet, yet it remains less explored than Mars. But that’s changing today. I spent the day with @UlyssesInc to learn about how they have reimagined submarines to be autonomous, smaller, smarter, and modular. The team is brilliant @Willob @Mr_Voorakkara @colm_o_brien @Jamedderburn I hope this video gives you an idea of how Ulysses is approaching exploration of humanities ocean frontier. The secrets beneath the surface are waiting to be told, and perhaps this technology will help us discover them. Also, shoutout to the investors led this round, @espricewright, @davidu, thanks for backing such exciting ideas!

.@willob: "I think it's worth going back and looking at history to understand that this is a historic anomaly that we haven't been as obsessed with exploring the oceans." "Since the dawn of time, mankind has dreamed of sea creatures, expeditions at sea." "And then it seems around the kind of sixties and seventies, um, we kind of forgot about it."

" It's exactly this kind of exploration spirit... we're trying to reignite and be like SpaceX for the ocean: get young kids dreaming about being aquanauts as well as astronauts." .@willob explains the  cultural and military reasons why there are so relatively few ocean tech companies: "The Navy had this program called SEALAB... they were sending people down to live at the bottom of the ocean." "Very unfortunately, we had the death of one of the members, Barry Cannon... down there." "That combined with the redirecting of a lot of the Navy's budget towards things like focusing on Vietnam... led to neglecting funding and resources." "50 years later, we're still working with the same tools in the ocean."

The Ocean is Earth's last Great Frontier. Historically, the pursuit of Frontiers has been one of the greatest engines of progress that mankind has ever known. In today's Not Boring, co-written with my good friend @packyM, I make the case that doing the same in our Ocean is one of the most underappreciated economic, cultural, and environmental opportunities of this century. We used to dream about this. In the 1960s, the Ocean was a co-equal ambition to the Moon. Then we gave it all up. Now is the time to go back. In this piece, I explain why we gave up on the Ocean, what history tells us about industrializing New Frontiers, the new technology today that makes it possible, and how we can completely rethink our relationship with the ocean. @UlyssesInc has the best branding of any hard tech startup its stage. Everything feels cohesive from their web presence to the moment you first step into their office. There’s lots of leverage in having a great brand, hiring being a big one.
