Last night in Coney Island, eight people — including four children — were shot when a family barbecue was shattered by an unconscionable act of gun violence. Coney Island is a neighborhood where generations of New Yorkers come together every summer to celebrate the Fourth of July, making this mass shooting all the more heartbreaking. My heart is with every person who was injured, their loved ones, and the entire Coney Island community. I am wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery. No parent should have to fear taking their child to a family barbecue. No child should ever have to experience the trauma of gun violence. Our administration is committed to taking an all-of-government approach to public safety and to protecting every New Yorker.

Public Health Update: Our administration is investigating a community cluster of Legionnaires' disease in several Upper East Side neighborhoods (ZIP codes 10028, 10128 and 10075). Our @NYCHealthy started their investigation earlier this week, and thanks to Commissioner Martin and his dedicated staff, the collection of water samples, laboratory testing and community outreach has been ongoing throughout the Fourth of July holiday weekend. This is not an issue with any buildings’ plumbing or indoor AC units, and residents in the area are safe to drink tap water, bathe, shower, cook, and use their air conditioner at home. Please contact a health care provider immediately if you live, work or visited the area since late June and are experiencing flu-like symptoms, such as cough, fever or difficulty breathing.
Our staff are working around the clock to inform the community and identify the source of the Legionnaires' disease cluster on the Upper East Side (ZIP codes 10028 & 10128). It is safe to use your AC. If you live in these ZIP codes, here's what to know. nyc.gov/legionnaires

The heat wave may have broken, but New Yorkers aren't in the clear just yet. Rain and storms will begin this evening and intensify overnight. Heavy downpours may bring flash flooding to streets and basements, with flood risks peaking during the morning commute. To prepare for these dangerous conditions, I have activated our Flash Flood Emergency Plan and issued a travel advisory beginning tonight through Tuesday morning. Please – take this weather seriously. Limit your travel and stay inside during heavy rain and storms. If you must go out, exercise caution and never walk or drive through floodwaters. Take public transit whenever possible. If you live in a basement, be on high alert and make a plan now for where you will go if flooding occurs. If waters begin to rise, move to higher ground immediately. Sign up for basement alerts at on.nyc.gov/basements. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger or trapped by rising water. City agencies are out clearing catch basins, inspecting flood-prone neighborhoods, and calling residents in basement apartments. Our Downed Tree Task Force and Tow Truck Task Force are on alert and ready to assist. Stay informed and ready to act. Sign up for emergency alerts from @NotifyNYC by texting NOTIFYNYC to 692-692 and report any issues like downed trees, blocked catch basins, or open hydrants to @nyc311. Visit nyc.gov/beready for emergency preparedness tips. We will get through these storms the city always does, by looking out for one another.

Early this morning in Crown Heights, Detective Robert Carroll was shot in the line of duty. I visited Detective Carroll at the hospital today, and I’m grateful his bulletproof vest protected him from more serious injury. I’m keeping him and his loved ones in my thoughts as he recovers. I’m thankful to Detective Carroll and every member of the NYPD working to keep New Yorkers safe through a busy holiday weekend. Every New Yorker deserves to come home safely at the end of the day. My administration will continue using every tool available to stop the scourge of gun violence and get illegal guns off our streets.

It was an honor to break bread this morning with the Department of Veteran Services and so many service members as we kick off Fleet Week here in New York City. Our city is home to more than 135,000 veterans, who deserve dignity from the minute they return.
As Mayor, I will not only recognize their service, but respond to their needs — and deliver the respect, support, and stability they are owed.

Happy Venezuelan Independence Day to everyone celebrating across New York City. Today, we honor Venezuela's long struggle for self-determination, the generations of people who have carried that history with them to our city, and Venezuelans around the world who are still reckoning with the tragic aftermath of this devastating earthquake. Our hearts are with our Venezuelan brothers and sisters during this moment of celebration and struggle.
¡Feliz Día de la Independencia! 🇻🇪

New York, it’s another hot and humid day, with high temperatures in the low 90s and a chance of rain and thunderstorms in the evening. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and head indoors if storms hit. Cooling centers, pools, beaches, and spray showers are open across the city. Visit finder.nyc.gov/coolingcenter… to find the location nearest you. As always, check on your neighbors. This heat wave is almost over.

Tonight we may see some fast-moving, scattered thunderstorms across our city. These storms often bring heavy rain and strong winds — both of which can be dangerous if you don’t seek shelter and exercise caution. If you’re planning to enjoy fireworks tonight, keep a close eye on updates from event organizers. As we saw last night, storms can develop quickly. Sign up for emergency weather alerts by texting NOTIFYNYC to 692-692.

Today’s Parade of Sail on the Hudson River was stunning. I’m so proud to be the Mayor of New York City — our nation’s first capital — and to be celebrating America’s 250th anniversary on its historic shores.

Yesterday, during Friday prayers at the Muslim Center of New York in Queens, a man reached for his pocket and congregants saw what looked like a firearm, creating a terrifying situation for Muslim New Yorkers who had gathered to worship. I’m immensely grateful and relieved that an MTA employee, a cab driver and an NYPD officer acted quickly to help ensure no one was hurt. Every New Yorker should be able to observe their religion without fear or intimidation.
