Costa Rica has outlawed recreational hunting, solidifying its role as a worldwide leader in animal protection and a safe haven for the remarkable 5% of global biodiversity it hosts. Home to an astonishing proportion of Earth's plant and animal species, Costa Rica stands as one of the planet's most vital biodiversity hotspots. Yet this extraordinary natural heritage faces ongoing threats from human activitiesโ€”including unsustainable wildlife tourism, illegal wildlife trade, domestic animal neglect, and organized animal fighting. As encounters between people and wildlife grow more frequent, the country's fragile ecosystems require proactive safeguards to protect their most vulnerable residents. Costa Rica has responded with groundbreaking animal welfare laws that reflect a deep national commitment to conservation. Building on its landmark 2012 nationwide ban on sport and trophy hunting, the country introduced stringent anti-trafficking measures in 2017 to combat poaching and biodiversity loss. By imposing mandatory prison sentences for animal cruelty and creating a national registry of offenders, Costa Rica demonstrates that effective conservation demands strong legal enforcement alongside widespread societal resolve to safeguard all living beings within its borders.

This is so, so disappointing @BBCTwo First Autumnwatch, now Winterwatch. Programmes that make the licence fee worth paying @BBCSpringwatch @ChrisGPackham @michaelastracha
Really sad news. The cancellation follows the BBC's announcement that a number of programmes would be dropped as part of its โ€˜evolving commissioning strategyโ€™

You can support @DefendOurJuries by buying a Bath Bomb from Lush. Today, it might be someone elseโ€™s rights being taken away, but tomorrow it could be yours
Police have arrested 14 Defend Our Juries protestors opposing the proscription of Palestine Action outside Londonโ€™s New Scotland Yard. In a significant escalation of their tactics, the protestors spoke one-by-one through a megaphone outside the Met headquarters. They declared their support for Palestine Action, their membership of the banned organisation, and encouraged the police surrounding them to join it too. When the megaphone was confiscated, they shouted instead. All were arrested under section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000. According to the Act, professing support for a proscribed group or inviting another to support a proscribed group is an offence, carrying a custodial sentence of up to 14 years. In the last twelve months, 3,500 plus protestors have been arrested for holding signs reading โ€˜I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Actionโ€™. Most of those arrests were made under section 13 of the Terrorism Act, an offence carrying a maximum term of 6 months. Among those arrested was 84-year-old Reverend Sue Parfitt, who was detained at the very first post-proscription protest, exactly one year ago today. Arrested several times since, she spoke to Novara Media as a police officer leafed through her bible, saying of Palestine Action, โ€œI support them, and I shall continue to support them. That apparently makes me a terrorist. Thatโ€™s OKโ€. Palestine Action was proscribed by then Home Secretary Yvette Cooper on 5 July last year. The first domestic direct action group in British history to be banned, the proscription was ruled unlawful by a judicial review earlier this year. Following a successful appeal by the government, that decision was quashed last month. As such, Palestine Action remains a proscribed terror organisation. โ€œIt may seem tongue-in-cheek to invite the police to join Palestine Action but the police havenโ€™t seen the funny side,โ€ said a spokesperson for Defend Our Juries, โ€œTens of thousands of children have already been murdered in Gaza. The best way the police could discharge their duty right now would be to target the British factories of Elbit Systems, the leading supplier of drones to the IDF.โ€

84-year old retired priest Sue Parfitt has been repeatedly arrested for breaking counter-terror law by holding signs to protest the proscription of Palestine Action. Today, she went further than ever before, vocally expressing support for the group, and encouraging the police arresting her to join her in that support. She was arrested under section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000, a criminal offence that carries a sentence of up to 14-years. She told Novara Media why sheโ€™ll continue to break the law.

One year ago today, the Government proscribed the direct action protest group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. Since then, over 3,300 arrests have been made of people holding placards. Treating protest as terrorism leaves the door wide open for governments to suppress protest movements in the future, while clamping down on solidarity with Palestinians right now. We cannot challenge injustice and uphold our own rights if we cannot come together to protest. We cannot allow the government to take that right away.

๐ŸšจURGENT: Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyaโ€™s life is in immediate danger, Physicians for Human Rights Israel and his lawyer warned Saturday, after a prison visit revealed the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital bearing fresh, severe injuries to his head, eyes, ears, and neck, so disfigured his own attorney initially struggled to recognize him. ๐Ÿ”นAttorney Nasser Odeh, who saw Abu Safiya Thursday at the underground Rakefet interrogation facility in Nitzan Prison, said he arrived shackled hand and foot, escorted by masked guards, struggling to breathe and speak, unable to sit upright, and repeatedly on the verge of losing consciousness. ๐Ÿ”นAbu Safiya told him that after his Supreme Court appeal was heard June 10, four or five guards entered his solitary cell at Ganot Prison and beat him with a hammer and batons, and that since his June 24 transfer to Rakefet he has been beaten daily, losing consciousness several times without receiving medical treatment. ๐Ÿ”นโ€œThis is the last time you will see me,โ€ he told his lawyer. โ€œThey brought me here to kill me. I donโ€™t see myself surviving. This is the end.โ€ ๐Ÿ”นPHRI notes the escalation in torture began directly after Abu Safiya challenged his detention in court. He has been held without charge since December 27, 2024, under Israelโ€™s Unlawful Combatants Law. ๐Ÿ”นThe group has appealed to Israelโ€™s attorney general and prison service demanding his immediate transfer, an independent medical examination, and an urgent judicial visit โ€œbefore it is too late.โ€ Photo: Amnesty International
