According to court records, Martin’s ex-fiancée brought his phone to police in 2021 after reporting that she found illegal material on it. However, courts later determined that officers violated Martin’s Fourth Amendment rights when they searched the phone and that important information about how police obtained the device was omitted from a search warrant affidavit. After appeals were exhausted, the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office said it could not move forward without the suppressed evidence and closed the case.
