GENEVA, SWITZERLAND | The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, arrived at the United Nations Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance on 6 July 2026, where she is joining ministers, government officials and technology leaders from around the world to discuss the future of AI governance. The two-day dialogue brings together representatives from governments, international organisations, the private sector, academia and civil society to discuss how artificial intelligence can be developed and used in a safe, responsible and inclusive manner. Held at Palexpo in Geneva, the dialogue provides a platform for countries to share experiences, discuss common approaches to AI governance and strengthen international cooperation as AI continues to shape economies and societies around the world. The Global Dialogue is being held ahead of the AI for Good Global Summit which will take place from 7-10 July 2026, where global leaders and experts will explore practical ways artificial intelligence can be used to address global challenges and improve people's lives. Hon. Theofelus' participation reflects Namibia's commitment to ensuring digital transformation and contribution to the discourse on the responsible development and use of the artificial intelligence.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS' RETREAT | Executive Directors from across Government are gathering in Swakopmund on 1 July 2026 for the Executive Directors' Retreat of the 8th Administration. The three-day retreat, which runs until 3 July 2026, was officially opened by Right Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Elijah Ngurare and focuses on improving the delivery of public services. The Prime Minister said Executive Directors are responsible for making sure Government plans become real services that improve people's lives. He urged them to work together, avoid delays and take responsibility to complete projects on time. He also called for better use of public funds and a stronger focus on delivering results for all Namibians. Welcoming participants to the retreat, Secretary to the Cabinet, Ambassador Emilia Mkusa said the gathering provides Executive Directors with an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing the Public Service, share ideas and agree on practical ways to improve service delivery. She encouraged participants to leave the retreat with clear actions that will help Government achieve its development goals. Also addressing the retreat, Chairperson of the Public Service Commission, Ambassador Patrick Nandago said Executive Directors have an important role in building an honest, efficient and responsive Public Service. He called for stronger leadership, greater accountability and closer cooperation across Government, while encouraging the wider use of digital systems to improve recruitment and public service delivery. The retreat is expected to produce practical actions that will help improve the performance of the Public Service and the delivery of services to the people of Namibia.

MINISTER MEETS NBC BOARD | The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Honourable Emma Theofelus, met with the Board of Directors of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) on 29 June 2026 at the Ministry's Head Office in Windhoek as part of the Ministry's quarterly engagement with the Board. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the Corporation's strategic direction, organisational priorities and other matters aimed at supporting its continued growth and effectiveness. During the engagement, the Minister outlined key priority areas for the Board to advance before the next quarterly meeting and requested progress updates on the agreed actions. The Board reaffirmed its commitment to working diligently to strengthen and position NBC as Namibia's preferred public broadcaster, while continuing to deliver quality services to the nation.

CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS | The Khomas Regional Council’s Windhoek West Constituency Office, under the leadership of Councillor Hon. Emma Tangi Muteka, facilitated a Cybersecurity Awareness Session for learners from various schools in Windhoek at the Kovambo Nujoma Hall on 13 June 2026. Recognising the growing importance of digital technologies in the lives of young people, Hon. Muteka championed the initiative to ensure that learners are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital space safely and responsibly. The awareness session was conducted by officials from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) and Salt Essential IT. Addressing the learners, MICT Executive Director Ms Linda Nakale highlighted the central role social media plays in modern society and encouraged young people to maintain a positive and responsible digital footprint. She stressed that online actions can have lasting consequences and urged learners to be mindful of their digital presence. Ms Nakale also raised awareness about online safety, including the dangers of cybercrime, cyberstalking and other digital threats. LAUNCHED | The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) officially launched the Community Media Policy 2026–2030 and its Implementation Plan in Okakarara on 19 June 2026, marking a significant milestone in strengthening community media as a vehicle for access to information, democratic participation, cultural preservation and local development. Speaking at the launch, Minister of ICT, Hon. Emma Theofelus, said the framework reflects Namibia's commitment to ensuring that every community has a voice and that information reaches all citizens, regardless of location. She noted that community media plays a vital role in promoting local languages, preserving cultural identity and creating platforms for communities to actively participate in national discourse. The policy provides a strategic framework to support the growth, sustainability and professionalisation of community media, including community radio stations, newspapers, online platforms and emerging digital initiatives. The Minister also extended appreciation to UNESCO, the National Planning Commission, the Namibia Community Broadcasters Network (NCBN), DW Akademie, the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN), Telecom Namibia, the Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), the University of Namibia (UNAM), Namibian Society of Composers and Authors of Music (NASCAM) and all community media stakeholders whose expertise, partnership and commitment contributed to the development of the policy. The launch marks the beginning of a new chapter for community media in Namibia, strengthening its role in ensuring that no community is left behind in the country's information society.
