London Bridge and the Blessing of the River Thames. On Sunday the clergies of Southwark Cathedral and the church of St Magnus the Martyr set out from their respective sides of the river, to meet at the centre of the bridge.
They then proceeded to bless the river with a short service and a wooden cross, tossed (carefully) into the waters below.
Typically taking place on the first Sunday after 6th January, this is a relatively modern tradition, but is linked to the much older Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, commemorating the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River.
The original London Bridge was the foundation of our charity in 1122, over 900 years ago. We now own and maintain five of the capital’s bridges -
@TowerBridge, London Bridge, Southwark Bridge, Millennium Bridge and Blackfriars road bridge – all at no cost to the taxpayer. We are supported in our work by our sole trustee,
@cityoflondon
Our thanks to St Magnus the Martyr for these photographs of the Blessing of the River Thames.
