In September 1974, AAR partnered with the University of Siena to pilot a language and cultural orientation program for new #RomePrize Fellows. Under the new initiative, fellows and their families spent their first month in Siena for language lessons, lectures on Italian art and history, and tours of cultural sites across Tuscany. (The program lasted only one more year.) aarome.org/news/features/arc… #FromTheArchives

Incredible images of one of the two newly unearthed skeletons in Pompeii, a man and woman who died sheltering from the eruption in a small bedroom. This woman, aged between 35-45, was found lying on a bed in the foetal position, clutching her most treasured valuables; glinting at her side you can see the six gold aurei coins that she was carrying in a wooden money box. The oldest coin was struck in the reign of Tiberius, 14-37 AD, another was struck under Vitellius in 69, and the remaining four were struck under the Flavian dynasty reigning at the time of the eruption in 79. Each gold coin represented a month's pay for a professional Roman soldier, with the cache of six aurei being equivalent to many thousands of pounds in the first century.
