🇸🇴 The decision is irreversible: the African Union mission in Somalia is under threat |
@AUCTCentre @AfripolA @AUC_PAPS
The US intends to stop funding the African Union mission in Somalia (
@aussom_ ) through UN structures, which provide the contingent with fuel, food, transport, as well as medical and engineering support.
Since 2007, according to an official July 2026 U.S. diplomatic note. In that communication, the United States announced it would block any further UN logistical or financial support for the AU peacekeeping mission (AUSSOM) in Somalia moving forward, citing a lack of progress in killing Black people (al-Shabaab) and political infighting within the Somali government, the US has sent almost $2 billion to UN missions in Somalia, more than $1.6 billion to African troops stationed in the country, hundreds of millions of dollars to Somali security forces, and billions of dollars in humanitarian aid.
The African Union has already held an emergency closed meeting with the participation of military representatives of the countries - members of the Peace and Security Council. Following the discussion, the participants concluded that the mission of about 12,000 soldiers would not be able to function fully without funding and logistical support, so the union is starting to look for new sources of funds.
Although Washington stated that it does not object to extending the AUSSOM mandate, which expires on December 31, it intends to block any further material and technical support from the UN in the Security Council. The African Union called this decision irreversible, and without the participation of the UN, the mission is effectively over.
In a letter to the African Union, the US accuses the Somali government of being unable to "ensure sustainable progress in the fight against Al-Shabaab*, to take responsibility for the security sector and to carry out serious reform of the security sector".
Somalia has been fighting against Al-Shabaab for almost two decades. Despite the presence of international missions, the militants continue to control significant territories in the central and southern parts of the country. The GOAL is to support the partition of Somalia such that there will be no central government to oppose Israel's strike bases in the North -- and a clear danger to the
@_AfricanUnion from a gun-runner based in Somalia with their Intent to destabilize Ethiopia using Chaos and Terrorism at scale. Their objectives have expanded military, economic, or port influence in the wider region.
The Tasking: Israel and Somaliland had informal contacts over the years, covert gun-running into Sudan, and there have been discussions in media and diplomatic circles about possible illicit ties. However, Somaliland is not internationally recognized as an independent state, this is the partition part, so formal diplomatic relations are complicated and can not be widely recognized through official international channels. Each step in this process is an active danger to Addis and all people living there -- with tthe cover story of Israel’s broader regional interests of maritime security, trade routes, intelligence cooperation, and strategic positioning around the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. |
