From what we know, the landslide mainly affected the decorative facade on the slope, not the primary structural elements. The region witnessed some of the heaviest rainfall ever recorded around Lonavala, triggering an unpredictable slope failure.
This isn’t something unprecedented. Even the Konkan Railway faced similar challenges in its early years because extreme monsoon conditions can reveal geological vulnerabilities that are impossible to predict with complete accuracy. You can’t realistically enclose an entire mountainside in concrete or steel. Infrastructure in such terrain is about planning, monitoring, mitigating risks, and continuously improving based on experience.
Hopefully, the remaining clearance work is completed soon and traffic is restored.
