Newport Beach in California faced major unrest as TikTok and social media posts drew large crowds of juveniles and young adults.
The city reported 402 arrests from the start of July 4 to 6 a.m. on July 5 amid chaos at Newport Pier and surrounding areas.
Crowds grew quickly and engaged in dangerous acts such as blocking roadways, restricting emergency access, and throwing explosive mortars, fireworks, and projectiles at officers and into packed areas near families.
Videos showed looting at stores like Pavilions on Balboa Blvd., theft of street signs, uprooting of palm trees, and piles of trash left behind.
One police officer was hit by a mortar and received care from the fire department.
Officials declared an unlawful assembly, with more than 350 officers from 17 agencies helping to clear the scene.
Footage captured police, including some on horseback, charging onto the beach as teens and young adults fled.
About 200 arrests involved people who refused dispersal orders near 28th Street.
Others were taken into custody for inciting the crowd, violent acts, and threats to public safety.
Locals expressed frustration on social media, blaming non-locals including out-of-state kids and calling out TikTok for promoting the event nationwide.
Influencer Ryan Rodal highlighted videos from across the country and urged future bans on out-of-town visitors.
The fire department responded to 102 incidents on July 4, including 10 fires, and transported 44 patients to hospitals, while crews later cleaned streets and public spaces.
